Strength from Within: Combining Pilates and Strength Training

Updated: Jul 25

In the world of fitness, the fusion of Pilates and Strength Training creates significant benefits. The combination of functional fitness, core strength, and flexibility with Pilates provides a well-rounded baseline for the power needed for strength training. The synergy between the two enhances physical performance but also promotes a sense of balance and alignment.

In the midst of the pandemic in 2020, during moments of uncertainty and personal health challenges, I turned to movement as a grounding force. For me, immersing myself into weight training provided a sense of routine and control that I needed at the time. Combining this with Pilates added an extra layer of body awareness, mindfulness, and mental well-being during transformative times.

Key Benefits of Fusing Pilates and Strength Training:

Functional Fitness

  • Pilates focuses on movement patterns, core stability and strength, posture, flexibility and mobility which are essential for proper form while strength training and in everyday life

  • Strength training on its own helps builds muscle, enhances bone density, and helps boost metabolism

Injury Prevention

  • Pilates helps improve muscle imbalances, better your alignment, and enhance your body awareness, which is crucial when lifting heavy weights

  • Strength training helps with your muscle imbalances and alignment, while also strengthen your ligaments, tendons, and bones to prevent the risk of strain or injury

Variety & Engagement

  • Pilates is a slow and controlled workout that focuses on smaller movements with a variety of equipment options (mat, reformer, chair, tower, barrel)

  • Strength training includes different machines/equipment with a wide range of exercises and weight resistance

  • Combining the two provides different levels of engagement and enhances overall performance & interest

Mind-Body Connection

  • Pilates offers a strong mind-body connection through centering and the control

  • With strong mind-body connection, there is an increase in mental clarity, stress relief and overall well-being

  • The increase in mind-body connection from Pilates helps connect more to the larger muscles groups in functional fitness and assists overall form when strength training

There are long-term benefits of combining both forms of movement. For me, this combination has changed my body composition and I have never felt stronger. Whether you’re new and early in your fitness journey or looking for a new fitness challenge, blending Pilates training with your strength training promises a transformative experience to spice up your exercise routine!
